Mumbai Indians have officially confirmed that Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as head coach of the men's franchise ahead of IPL 2027. The parting has been described as mutual by both parties, bringing to a close a decade-long association between the Sri Lankan legend and one of the IPL's most decorated franchises.

Jayawardene took charge of the Mumbai Indians dugout for the first time ahead of the 2017 season. His initial stint ran through to the end of the 2022 campaign, during which he guided the side to three IPL titles, in 2017, 2019 and 2020, contributing to the franchise's overall tally of five championships. After 2022, he moved into a broader performance-orientated role within the MI ecosystem as the franchise extended its footprint into overseas leagues. He returned to the head coach position ahead of IPL 2025.

His second stint produced mixed results. The Mumbai-based side advanced to Qualifier 2 in IPL 2025, showing signs of a revival, but the 2026 season proved difficult as the side finished ninth in the standings, second from the bottom. No official reason for the departure has been disclosed beyond the mutual nature of the decision.

“Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us. On behalf of the entire MI family, I want to thank Mahela for his immense contribution and unwavering commitment over the years. We will always cherish the journey we have shared and the memories we have created together,” team owner Nita Ambani stated.

Jayawardene, for his part, reflected on the association with evident pride.

"I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead," Jayawardene expressed.
